Why Cats Pull That Funny Face After Smelling Things

If you live with a cat you have probably seen this moment. The moment I am talking about is that your cat smells something and then freezes with an open mouth with a strange face intact. Have you ever experienced such a thing with your cat? Such an act may let you feel wired but they do this with a purpose. It is true that they understand the world better than human eyes and here is why cats make that funny face after smelling certain things.

The Flehmen Response

People called it the flehmen response when cats make such a face expression. They do this when they smell something indifferent or interesting. Many individuals believe that it helps them study the scent more closely instead of reacting in confusion.

Using a Special Sense Organ

Cats have a special organ which they use during smelling which is located in the roof of their mouth. Basically, this helps them read smells in a deeper way. The moment they open the mouth, scent is sent to the mouth for better understanding.

They Are Not Grossed Out

Whenever they do such a weird act this doesn’t mean that they do intentionally but with a purpose. They are not reacting badly but focused and thinking. Their brain and organs are working hard to understand the smell.

Strong Smells Trigger the Reaction

They may smell certain things in your home or outside but they only act weird when they smell something stronger which causes the reaction on their face to trigger in time. The stronger the smell, the more likely the funny face appears.

Helps Cats Read Messages

Many people believe that scents carry messages for cats and they are only able to understand it. They can learn who has been nearby or what animal passed through. Whatever they mean, for us it’s totally non understandable.

Kittens Learn This Behavior Naturally

Indeed, Kittens start using this reaction as they grow and explore new smells around them. They make such faces because they are thinking hard to understand or totally confused about what to conclude.

It Is Completely Normal

Well, you don’t have to panic because this behavior is normal for cats of all ages. It does not mean pain or sickness. It shows curiosity and a healthy sense of smell doing its job.

It Is One of Many Cat Quirks

If you think something wrong happens to your cat when they make such a face after smelling things. This is normal because all other cats often carry such behavior. It reminds us that cats experience the world very differently than humans do.

Unfamiliar Smells

You may agree that cats are very curious animals. When they smell something new their brain wants extra information or more enough time to recognize the particular. When they understand they may reduce their facial expression.

This Face Helps Cats Stay Safe

Indeed, they have a habit of smelling certain things and this way they ensure their safety and surroundings effectively. It helps them decide if something is safe, friendly or best avoided.
